Manual Therapy from Valery Gergiev

A concert given by the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra (St. Petersburg) under Valery Gergiev at the Organ Hall in Naberezhnye Chelny on KAMAZ’s invitation became a big event in the city’s cultural life and a remarkable charity performance on 1 of June, International Children’s Day.

All funds raised from sales of tickets to the concert of the world-famous orchestra, handicrafts and paintings by children exhibited in the foyer of the Organ Hall in addition to private donations were presented to the “Children with Cerebral Palsy” Foundation and the “Emerald City” Project which helps children suffering from cerebral spastic infantile paralysis in their medical treatment and rehabilitation. The Foundation was established three years ago on KAMAZ’s initiative, and in 2007-2009 it organized trips for several groups of children to Truskavets – the only health resort on the territory of the CIS countries where children can undergo a course of medical treatment for cerebral palsy under the guidance of well-known doctor Vladimir Kozyavkin. Young citizens of Naberezhnye Chelny who have this illness received the tickets for free as a present from the mentioned foundation.

To date the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, one of the oldest in Russia, is among the world’s top ten orchestras. This is the only high-level instrumental ensemble representing Russia in the rating of the largest Britain newspaper – The Financial Times. Mr. Valery Gergiev, general director and artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre and principal conductor of its orchestra, has been at the head of the orchestra since 1996.

The program of the charity concert included works by Edvard Grieg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Pyotr Tchaikovsky. This was the famous musician’s first visit to Naberezhnye Chelny.

Gergiev’s style of performance is unique; it is manual therapy to some degree. The maestro conducts with all ten fingers. There is nothing affected in his plastique, and every note is not only audible, but also “visible”. Gergiev conducts the orchestra and, surprisingly, the audience too.

After Brahms’ Hungarian Dance played by the musicians an encore Mr. Sergey Kogoghin, Director General of OJSC KAMAZ and Mr. Vasil Shaykhraziev, Head of the city’s Executive Committee appeared on the stage. Mr. Shaykhraziev called this event “a cultural revolution”. This term was explained by the top manager of KAMAZ:

– This April I happened upon Valery Gergiev in Sberbank’s office in Moscow. Our dialogue there resulted in this wonderful concert. We thank the musicians very much for their inspired performance! I think today we have started a new tradition; we will be friends with the outstanding musicians of the Mariinsky Theatre and maestro Valery Gergiev.
